OHLA Post-Election Updates and Upcoming Events

October turned out to be a crazy, scary month—even without the aid of supernatural beings or paranormal phenomena. And, the break-neck pace of work to be done doesn't seem to be slowing down in post-election November. Borrowing from Planned Parenthood's "Thanks and Spanks," here's a list—autumnally corrected—of "Tricks and Treats" for the last month:

Treats

For OHLA
AWESOME NEW MEMBERS!
The biggest treat we've had in the past month is the amount of new faces joining us on Facebook and in person. The amount of interest and enthusiasm we've seen is encouraging. Thanks to all new members for contacting and joining us in our efforts!

Jen S., Sarah L., and Molly T. at AAUW
OHLA AT AAUW
On Monday, Nov. 7, OHLAs Jen S., Molly T., and Sarah L. delivered a panel presentation to the Trumbull Co.-Warren branch of the American Association of University Women (AAUW). The presentation sought to educate and raise awareness on representations of gender and sex in the media. Schima presented and debunked dangerous "rape myths" propagated by the media; Toth explored LGBT representations in the media in the 20th-21st centuries; Lowry addressed male and female responses to female political candidates through political cartoons.

At the event, the OHLAs had the pleasure to meet Regina Waris and Isabel Seavey, who are leaders in the Mahoning Valley Organizing Collaborative (MVOC)'s anti-human trafficking campaign. We hope to be able to combine forces and help them with future projects. We can start by signing their petition to encourage the Warren Law Dept. to write all seven (7) of the campaign's anti-human trafficking legislative recommendations.

THE PERSONHOOD AMENDMENT (ISSUE 26) IN MISSISSIPPI WAS DEFEATED!
For coverage of the event, check out the following articles:
Special thanks to all of the Ohio volunteers who phone banked for countless hours during the days leading up to the election. Our friends in Mississippi's lives have been saved because of your hard work and dedication.
*Note: Lots of OH-MI connections here. We need to be paying close attention to these issues. Read Jill Hanauer's "Lessons from Mississippi."

SB 5/SSUE 2 DEFEATED IN OHIO!
Though not directly an anti-women bill, SB 5 would have hurt thousands of working women and their families. Lucky for all residents of Ohio, we don't have to worry about these damages, but we must stay vigilant. Articles are already suggesting that there's talk of making Ohio a Right to Work state in other ways.

Here's an article from the Washington Post covering both pieces of legislation, "Ohio Repeals Law Restricting Unions; Mississippi Blocks 'Personhood' Amendment." And another from the Post

OHLAWEEN EXNAYED
Much to our dismay, we were unable to hold the OHLA-ween FUNdraiser. We had lots of excellent support and donations, but we had to cover some unexpected expenses that would have cost us too much out-of-pocket. We'd like to take this time to thank our generous donors for all of the great items you donated to the event. We'll definitely take you up on those items in an upcoming fundraiser:

Karen O'Malia, Amber Pence, Amanda Miller, Rebecca Soldan and family, Brooke Slanina and the Oakland Theater, Student Literary Arts Association, and the First Unitarian Universalist Church of Youngstown.
